The Akari Light Sculptures (1951) by Isamu Noguchi are a series of light fixtures handcrafted from traditional washi paper by Japanese artisans. 'The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back into the light of our origin - the sun.' (Noguchi)
Each lamp is meticulously crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family business based in Gifu. In a first step, bamboo rods are stretched over the original wooden shapes designed by Noguchi to form the structure that determines the shape of the object. Washi paper, derived from the bark of the mulberry tree, is cut into strips to fit the size and shape of the bulb and then glued onto the bamboo ribs. After the glue dries, the wooden form is removed and the shade can be folded. Akari Light Sculptures are packaged for transport or storage in flat boxes specially designed for the luminaires.
