The black and white images of Africa by Sebastião Salgado come together in this remarkable photographic collection, filmed over 30 years. These images tell the story of a continent wracked with problems but immensely rich in history and culture. With humility and insight, Salgado draws us to multiple and diverse regions that survive in the face of environmental and humanitarian crises. This book brings together Salgado's photos of Africa in three parts. The first is concentrated in the southern part of the continent (Mozambique, Malawi, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia), the second in the Great Lakes region (Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya) and the third in sub-Saharan region (Burkina Faso, Mali, Sudan, Somalia, Chad, Mauritania, Senegal, Ethiopia). Texts are provided by renowned Mozambican novelist Mia Couto, who describes how Africa today reflects the effects of colonization as well as the consequences of economic, social and environmental crises. Photographer Sebastião Salgado began his career as a professional photographer in Paris in 1973 and later worked with the photo agencies Sygma, Gamma and Magnum Photos. In 1994, he and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado created Amazonas Images, which is now his studio, and he exclusively takes care of his work. Salgado's photographic projects have been featured in many exhibitions and books, including Sahel. L'Homme en détresse (1986), Other Americas (1986), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations (2000), The Children (2000), Africa (2007), Genesis (2013), The Scent of a Dream (2015), Kuwait. A Burning Desert (2016) and Gold (2019).
